How to rotate your Neon database password
Updated October 2026
Your Neon app does not run on a "Neon API key." It runs on a password, the one sitting inside your DATABASE_URL. Reset that password, not a key from Account Settings. The API key page is for calling Neon's own management API, a different credential, used for a different job.
Here is the exact process, from Neon's own docs.
The manual steps
- Open your database's roles. In the Neon Console, open your project, pick the branch, then go to Roles.
- Reset the password. Choose Reset password on the role your app uses, then confirm. Neon generates a brand new password right there.
- Build the new connection string. Same host, same role name, new password. Update
DATABASE_URLeverywhere your app reads it. - Confirm the app works. The old password is already dead by this point, so test as soon as you can.
You can do step 2 by API instead of the console: POST /projects/{project_id}/branches/{branch_id}/roles/{role_name}/reset_password. Neon's own docs are direct about what happens next, checked October 24, 2026: "A password reset takes effect immediately. The old password stops working on the next connection."
Why this is not a two-step revoke like Stripe or OpenAI
Resetting a Neon role's password does both jobs in the same click. It makes the new password and kills the old one at the same time. There is no overlap window and no separate revoke step to remember. That is safer in one way, nothing stays alive by accident, and riskier in another: if you have not updated every place DATABASE_URL lives yet, your app goes down the moment you reset.
The actual Neon API key is a different thing
Neon also has a separate API key, under Account Settings > API Keys. That key lets a program call Neon's own management API: create a project, list branches, and so on. It is not what your app uses to connect to Postgres, and losing or revoking it does not touch your database password at all. If a database credential leaked, the fix is the password reset above, not that key.
What breaks if you miss a place
Because the reset kills the old password right away, anything still holding it, a serverless function, a CI secret, a teammate's .env file, starts failing on its next connection attempt. There is no grace period to lean on.
How to check the old password is actually dead
Try connecting with the old connection string after the reset. A failed connection means it worked. If it still connects, you likely reset the wrong role or the wrong branch. Check both.
Or let Key Robot do it
This works today. Key Robot resets the password behind your DATABASE_URL for apps hosted on Netlify, running from your own GitHub Actions. To dodge the downtime problem above, it keeps two roles and takes turns: it resets the password on the role your app is not using yet, builds the new connection string, checks your app still works with it, and only then resets the other role's password, the one it just retired. The old connection string goes dead at the end, not in the middle.
If the check fails, your app keeps using the role that still works. No downtime, and no guessing which half is current. There is also a Kill it now button for a password that leaked right now, outside the daily cycle. On October 24, 2026, our demo robot replaced two keys, Neon and Resend, in one run. It checked the app and confirmed both old keys dead in 27.7 seconds of robot time.
Your password is locked in your browser before anything is sent, and saved as an encrypted GitHub Actions secret in your own GitHub account. Key Robot's own server never sees the password itself, only names, dates, and results. Free for one app, no card.

Questions
Does resetting a Neon database password happen instantly?
Yes. Neon's own docs say a password reset takes effect immediately, and the old password stops working on the next connection. There is no multi-day grace period like Stripe gives its secret keys.
Can I avoid downtime when I reset a Neon password by hand?
Not with one role. The reset itself makes the new password and kills the old one in the same action, so there is a gap between the reset and updating every place DATABASE_URL lives. The only way around it is keeping two roles and switching your app between them, which is what Key Robot does automatically.
Is a Neon API key the same as my database password?
No. The API key under Account Settings calls Neon's own management API, for jobs like creating projects. Your app connects to Postgres with a role password inside DATABASE_URL, a different credential. Resetting one does not touch the other.
