Best API key rotation tools in 2026, ranked
Updated October 2026
Most "secrets managers" store your keys and charge extra once you want rotation turned on. This list only ranks tools by one question: does it actually change the key for you, and what does that cost. Every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, checked October 24, 2026.
1. Key Robot
Who it's for: a solo developer or small team who wants a key to actually change, with no vault to pay for. It runs in your own GitHub Actions, makes a new key, checks your app still works, and deletes the old one, daily, for free, for one app, no card. We timed Kill it now on our own demo app on October 23, 2026: 82 seconds from pressing the button to the old key being dead.
Honest limit: today this only covers Neon, Resend and Supabase keys, for apps hosted on Netlify or Vercel. Cloudflare and OpenAI are built and being tested, not live yet. If you need a service outside that list rotated today, it isn't ready for that yet.
2. AWS Secrets Manager
Who it's for: a team already on AWS, comfortable writing a rotation Lambda. Rotation is included at $0.40 per secret a month plus $0.05 per 10,000 API calls, no separate fee for the feature itself, but you build and run the rotation code.
3. HashiCorp Vault
Who it's for: a team with someone to run and patch Vault, or budget for HCP's managed tiers. Rotation is a core feature once Vault is set up. HCP production tiers start around $1,150 a month plus $73 to $113 per connected client.
4. Akeyless
Who it's for: a team that wants short-lived, generated-on-demand secrets instead of long-lived keys. The free plan covers 5 clients, 500 static secrets, and 5 dynamic secrets. Dynamic secrets are close to rotation by design, since each one expires on its own. Enterprise pricing is custom and usage-metered, according to Akeyless's pricing page, checked October 24, 2026.
5. Doppler
Who it's for: a team that wants one shared vault and doesn't mind paying per seat for rotation. The free Developer plan has no rotation. It turns on with the Team plan, $21 a month per user after a 14-day trial.
6. Infisical
Who it's for: a team that wants an open source, self-hostable vault. The free plan has no rotation. Pro covers database rotation only, at $20 per identity a month. Full rotation is $40 per identity a month on Advanced.
7. Bitwarden Secrets Manager
Who it's for: a small team that wants the most generous free tier here (2 users, 3 machine accounts, 3 projects) for storing machine secrets. It has no built-in rotation feature. You trigger your own.
8. 1Password Secrets Automation
Who it's for: a team already paying for 1Password's Business plan, extending the same vault to machine credentials. There's no standalone price and no free tier. It's bundled into 1Password's Business plan for teams that already pay for human password management.
9. GitGuardian
Who it's for: a team that wants to know when a key leaks into a public repo, not a tool that rotates anything. It scans for exposed secrets and alerts you. The free plan covers up to 25 developers, which is generous, but detection is a different job than rotation. Pair it with an actual rotation tool, not instead of one.
How to read this list
If the job is "store many kinds of secrets for a team," pick from the middle of this list and expect a per-seat or per-identity bill once rotation matters. If the job is "make this one key change on a schedule without paying for a vault," Key Robot and AWS Secrets Manager are the two that actually include rotation without a separate fee for it, and Key Robot is the one that needs no code from you, for the services it already supports.
See the compare hub for a full head-to-head against each of these, or what to do right now if a key already leaked.
Questions
What's the difference between a secrets manager and a rotation tool?
A secrets manager stores keys for a team to read. A rotation tool changes the key itself on a schedule. Most tools on this list do the first and charge extra for the second.
Which tool rotates keys for free?
Key Robot rotates Neon, Resend and Supabase keys daily for free, for one app, no card. AWS Secrets Manager includes rotation too, but charges per secret and requires you to write the rotation code yourself.
Does this list include every secrets manager?
No. It only includes tools with a documented rotation feature or a clear reason they don't rotate at all, like GitGuardian, which detects leaks instead.
