Doppler alternatives for teams who actually want keys rotated
Updated October 2026
Doppler stores secrets well. Automatic rotation is a $21-a-month add-on, and only on its Team plan. If rotation is the feature you actually want, it's worth looking at what else is out there before paying for a seat you don't need otherwise.
Here's what Doppler itself charges, and four real alternatives, including one built only to rotate keys and nothing else.
What Doppler charges, for the record
Doppler's Developer plan is free for up to 3 users, then $8 a month per additional user, and it does not include automatic secret rotation. Rotation shows up starting on the Team plan, free for a 14-day trial and then $21 a month per user. Enterprise adds proxied and on-prem rotation, at custom pricing. (Doppler's pricing page, checked October 24, 2026)
The real cost of "Doppler with rotation" for a two-person team is $42 a month, not the $0 or $16 the Developer tier might suggest at first glance.
Alternative 1: Infisical
Infisical's free plan has no rotation at all. Its Pro plan, at $20 per identity a month billed annually, only covers rotation "for public databases." Full secret rotation across the board doesn't show up until the Advanced plan, at $40 per identity a month. (Infisical's pricing page, checked October 24, 2026)
Infisical is open source, which Doppler isn't, so it's the right alternative if self-hosting matters to you more than price. It doesn't solve the rotation-costs-extra problem. It just moves the line to a different number. See the full Infisical alternatives roundup for more on this.
Alternative 2: AWS Secrets Manager
If your stack already lives on AWS, Secrets Manager charges $0.40 per secret a month plus $0.05 per 10,000 API calls, and automatic rotation is included at no extra charge. AWS's own pricing page states that rotating a secret creates a new version you aren't billed for separately, checked October 24, 2026.
That's the cheapest path to real rotation on this list, as long as you're comfortable wiring up AWS's own rotation Lambda for each secret type yourself and you're already paying for AWS.
Alternative 3: HashiCorp Vault
Vault can rotate almost anything, and it's the tool most large engineering teams reach for once they outgrow a hosted vendor. The cost is that Vault is software you run. Someone on your team installs it, patches it, and keeps it available, which is a real job, not a checkbox. For a solo developer or a two-person team, that's usually more infrastructure than the problem calls for.
Alternative 4: Key Robot
Key Robot isn't a vault at all. It doesn't ask you to store your keys anywhere. It runs from your own GitHub Actions, generates a new key for a connected service every day, checks that your app still works with it, and deletes the old one. If a check fails, it puts the old key back by itself. There's a Kill it now button for a leaked key that works outside the daily cycle too. We timed it on our own demo app on October 23, 2026: 82 seconds from pressing the button to the old key being dead.
It's free for one app, no card, and it never stores your keys itself. They're locked in your browser before anything is sent. Today it works with Neon, Resend and Supabase keys, for apps on Netlify or Vercel, with Cloudflare and OpenAI built and being tested.
The verdict
Pick Doppler or Infisical if you need a shared vault your whole team reads from, with rotation as one feature among many, and you don't mind paying a per-seat price for it.
Pick AWS Secrets Manager if you're already all-in on AWS and willing to configure rotation per secret type yourself.
Pick HashiCorp Vault if you're past the point where a hosted vendor's pricing model makes sense and you have someone who can own running it.
Pick Key Robot if you don't want a vault at all. You just want your keys to actually change on a schedule, from infrastructure you already have, without a new per-seat bill. See the rotate hub for which services it covers today, or what to do if a key already leaked.
Questions
Does Doppler rotate API keys automatically on its free plan?
No. Doppler's free Developer plan (up to 3 users, then $8 a month per additional user) doesn't include automatic secret rotation. Rotation is a feature of the Team plan, which costs $21 a month per user after a 14-day trial.
Is there a free alternative to Doppler that actually rotates keys?
Key Robot is free for one app and rotates keys daily from your own GitHub Actions, with no vault to pay for. AWS Secrets Manager is close to free at scale too, around $0.40 per secret a month with rotation included, but it needs an AWS account and some setup per secret.
What's the real difference between a secrets manager and something like Key Robot?
A secrets manager like Doppler or Infisical is a place your team stores and reads secrets from, with rotation as an add-on feature. Key Robot doesn't store anything. It's a scheduled job that generates a new key, checks your app still works, and deletes the old key, running from infrastructure you already have.
